Angela Quartey – Women in Leadership

My name is Angela Quartey, a final year student at Valley View University(VVU) and the Women’s Commissioner for the 2024/25 academic year. My journey began in Berekuso where I lived with my parents and siblings until I completed my high school education. I attended the Berekuso L/A JHS for my basic and junior high school education and Diaspora Girls for my senior high school where I served as a class secretary.  During that period in 2014, I enrolled in Bowney Initiative as part of their first cohort. It was a transformative experience for me, as I developed my communication and business management skills. The experience boosted my confidence and set the stage for my involvement in student leadership and advocacy.

My candidacy for the Women’s Commissioner position at VVU was driven by a passion for advocating for women’s rights. From a young age, I engaged in initiatives aimed at uplifting women in my community. This included helping women calculate their income, teaching my cousins and other girls in Berekuso how to read and write, and encouraging girls to pursue learning and independence. Running for this position provided me with a platform to drive meaningful change and support female students at the university.

As Women’s Commissioner, my goal is to equip our female students, numbering between 1,500 and 2,000 as of the 2023/2024 academic year, with the skills they need to thrive in the job market. This includes organizing career development sessions, enhancing data analytics capabilities, and providing training in healthcare management. Additionally, I plan to offer practical skills workshops in makeup and interior design. My dedication to these programs will ensure our students are well-prepared for their future careers and personal growth.

This experience has honed my leadership skills, deepened my commitment to advocacy, and strengthened my resolve to empower women and make a positive impact in my community.

My story is a moving example of a young woman determined to make a difference, driven by my passion for women’s rights and my dedication to creating a supportive and empowering environment for all.  I am committed to forging a path where every woman can thrive and achieve her full potential. I hope my journey inspires others to pursue their dreams, advocate for what they believe in, and create lasting change in their communities.
