On August 27, 2025, one of our girls, Salomey Opentubea Dartey, joined 120 high school students from 54 schools across nine regions of Ghana and four other countries for the Ashesi Innovation Xperience (AIX). The two-week program offered hands-on learning in four exciting tracks: Robotics, Engineering, Creative Arts, and Entrepreneurship along with general sessions at the beginning that brought all participants together. Salomey, a General Arts graduate from Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School, was placed in the Robotics track, where she explored her passion for blending creativity and technology.
“I was drawn to AIX because of its innovative approach to design thinking, leadership, robotics, entrepreneurship, and creative arts,” she said.
Learning and Challenges
In her track, Salomey learned coding, robotics, and design thinking, and came to appreciate the phrase: “All models are wrong, but some are useful.” She also enjoyed collaborating through team work and building friendships with peers from diverse backgrounds.
However, the experience was not without its challenges. During group discussions, she sometimes noticed other participants laughing when she spoke, which made her hesitant to answer questions. She soon realized that other students were experiencing the same fear.
“I shared my struggles with the faculty. They addressed it, which helped not only me but also others who had been quiet. It taught me that sometimes you have to advocate for yourself and for others.”
Through this courage, Salomey not only found her own voice but also helped create a more inclusive environment where everyone could contribute.

A Changed Perspective
Being in the Robotics track opened her eyes to how AI and robotics can solve real-world problems.
“When our robot failed to move, it taught me resilience and perseverance to learn from challenges and find solutions.”
Her team also placed 4th in the Google Game Puzzle challenge, a proud achievement alongside her official certificate of participation.
The Bowney Impact
Being a Bowney Alumni continues to shape how Salomey sees her future.
“If I could describe Bowney in one sentence, I would say it is an organization that empowers young individuals to reach their full potential through innovative programs and mentorship.”
Looking ahead, she hopes to study Law and Public Policy at Ashesi University, while staying connected with Bowney to empower more young girls like herself.
Her Advice to Other Girls
For girls who dream of applying to AIX or other opportunities, Salomey’s message to you is
“Stay curious and be open to new experiences. Believe in yourself, even when it feels uncomfortable. Prepare well, because luck is when opportunity meets preparation. With hard work and determination, you’ll be ready when your chance comes.”
